The Year of Words: Day 296

An interesting word for our archaic today, with an interesting origin.

Having family roots in Somerset, England I'm aware of the village of Halse in that county, indeed some of my ancestors came from there.

I wonder whether the fact the Viking influence extended well into Somerset and the Devon border could indicate a meeting place or more general Norse origin for the village. I think some further investigation may be due.

A portmanteau that isn't for today's modern offering which is all Greek to me.
