The year of words: Day 299

A mix of surprise and weariness with today's choices of words.

I was certainly surprised to see that many dictionaries consider this an archaic word. I've still found it used in conversation and semi-popular fiction. Though maybe that tells you more about the people I know and books I read rather than the state of national useage.

As for pretaliating, I find it invokes a reaction not unlike that seen when a cat brings up a fur ball. The creation seems entirely forced. The definition is also questionable from a logical sense for a poor country boy like me. But then, what do I know.

I wish you a day free from pretaliations and lassitude.
